First message ideas that actually work
Move past "hi, how are you" with openers that show you read their profile.
You've matched — now what? A good first message is short, friendly and shows you paid attention.
Reference their profile
Pick something they wrote or a shared interest. "You mentioned you love hiking — what's the best trail you've done in Nigeria?" is much easier to answer than "hi".
Ask an open question
Questions that start with what, how or which invite a real answer. Avoid questions that can be answered with yes or no.
Keep it light
A first message isn't the place for your life story or anything too personal. Aim for curiosity and warmth.
A few openers to adapt
- "Your profile says you're a great cook. What's the one dish you'd make to impress someone?"
- "We both picked travel as an interest. Where's next on your list?"
- "I see you're looking for something long-term too. What does a perfect Sunday look like for you?"
Be patient
People are busy. If someone doesn't reply straight away, give them time. And if a conversation isn't flowing, it's fine to move on kindly.
