Most arguments aren’t about the issue — they’re about how it was raised. This four-step approach helps you say what you need without your partner feeling attacked.
1. Pick the moment
Not in the middle of an argument, in front of others, or when either of you is exhausted or hungry. “Can we talk about something tonight?” is a kind start.
2. Describe what happened — just the facts
“When plans changed at the last minute on Saturday…” instead of “You always ruin everything.”
3. Say how it made you feel
“…I felt unimportant.” Feelings are hard to argue with; accusations invite a defence.
4. Ask for something specific
“Could you message me earlier if plans change?” A clear request gives your partner a way to help.
Then listen
Let them answer without interrupting. You may learn something you didn’t know. If things get heated, agree to pause and come back to it — and actually come back.
